The Differences Between Democrats and Republicans

By Alesha Jackson
2007 Gladys Harrington Scholarship winner

While Republicans and Democrats both strive to govern in ways that they feel are best for all people, there are significant differences between the two parties. Republicans tend to be more socially conservative and supportive of a smaller government, allowing the citizens to manage their affairs with little governmental influence. In contrast, the Democrats tend to be more socially liberal on most topics and supportive of a large government that impacts the citizens much more directly. Republicans feel that they are following the true and original ideals of the Constitution and that government should support the efforts of the people and protect them from anything that would hinder the lawful pursuit of "Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness". Liberals also feel that they are supporting the Constitution. However, they feel that supporting and protecting the citizens includes the government having a major impact on how people live and making decisions that it feels are in the best interest of its' citizens. This is a key difference because Conservatives do not want the government telling them how to live and Liberals think that the citizens need them in order to service effectively. Both parties have a tendency to discount the views of each other because they feel like their way is the only way. One example demonstrating their differences is taxation.

Taxation is a major issue, causing many conflicts between the two parties. Although the sixteenth Amendment gave Congress the right to collect federal income tax, not everyone agrees with how it is done. Republicans think taxes should be cut to stimulate the economy and help prosper families. Democrats feel taxes should be cut on the poor and middle class while being increased for the wealthy. Democrats want a tax code that subsidizes wealth for the poor by unfairly penalizing the wealthy. For example, Democrats believe that the percentage should dramatically increase with income levels, meaning the wealthy subsidize the less lucrative and the poor. Republicans however believe that taxation should be based upon a graduated percentage, no matter how much money you make, and that every citizen should be taxed more equally, as a percentage, when paying taxes. Republicans support the principles of Governor Bush's Tax Cut, while Democrats greatly disagree with the Bush's Tax Cut. Republicans believe that his five points will help families and the economy.

My parents are conservative but educated me on both the Democratic and Republican parties. I was allowed to make the decision to be a Democrat or a Republican on my own. After studying what each party believes I have decided to be a Republican. I believe that it is unfair to tax the rich more for being wealthy as though they are being punished. I also believe that having smaller government is best because an intrusive government limits the freedoms that the citizens actually enjoy. The government is supposed to support the people not dictate how they should live.
